Standard 1:  Reading Process

Benchmark:  Demonstrate phonics

a.  TLW apply decoding skills to words, i.e.: prefixes, suffixes, plurals  . . .

Benchmark:  Demonstrate vocabulary skills

a.       TLW recognize and define grade appropriate or content appropriate vocabulary

Standard 2:  Reading a Variety of Texts

Benchmark:  Demonstrate comprehension

a.       TLW examine the author’s view or purpose

b.      TLW recognize clue words as a means of sequencing

c.       TLW use prior knowledge and experience to respond to new information, i.e.: predicting, inferring, drawing conclusions, deducing meaning . . .

Eighth Grade Language

Standard 1: Writing Process

c.       TLW support a topic sentence with 8-9 details

Eighth Grade Science

Standard 1:  Science as Inquiry

Benchmark:  Demonstrate the skills necessary to conduct scientific investigations

a.       TLW evaluate and analyze data from scientific investigations

b.      TLW gather, chart, and graph data gathered from scientific experiments

c.       TLW define and use terms associated with the scientific method:  infer, predict, estimate, hypothesis, theory and conclusion

Standard 2:  Physical Science

            Benchmark:  Understand the composition and properties of matter

a.       TLW identify the structure of an atom, and evaluate how this structure affects an atom’s function

b.      TLW interpret how and why the Periodic Table is arranged

Benchmark:  Understand mathematical relationships among energy, forces, and motion

a.       TLW evaluate processes such as density, pressure, and temperature, and how they affect the earth’s system

Standard 4:  Earth and Space Science

Benchmark:  Understand how the history of the earth has lead to its appearance today

a.       TLW identify the layers of the earth by their chemical and physical makeup

b.      TLW explain how the processes of weathering, erosion, and deposition have helped shape the earth

c.       TLW explain the relationship between the processes of convection and plate tectonics and how they influence volcanic activity and earthquake formation

d.      TLW describe how weather and cloud formation affect the earth

e.       TLW discuss how the earth’s place in the solar system and its orientation to the sun affect the earth

f.        TLW analyze the various geo-chemical cycles and how they are maintained on the earth

            Benchmark:  Show ability to use map skills, charts, and graphs

Standard 2:  History

Benchmark:  Discover the events surrounding the colonization of North America

Benchmark:  Understand the impact of war on U.S. history

8th Grade Art

Standard One:  Understand and apply different media, techniques, and processes to communicate in the visual arts

            Benchmark:  Intentionally use fine art media to effectively reflect ideas

a.        TLW create projects in a variety of media, i.e.:  pencil, ink, tempera, oil crayons, clay, wire

Standard Two:  Apply knowledge of the organizational components of visual art and the elements and principles of design to artwork

            Benchmark:  Use principles of design in composing artwork

a.       TLW create a life plastering project

Standard Three:  Choose and evaluate a range of subject matter, symbols, and ideas

            Benchmark:  Integrate visual concepts with subject matter to communicate ideas

a.       TLW create a pencil drawing with 2 diverse items

Standard Four:  Understand the visual arts in relation to history and cultures and the roles of art for self and society

            Benchmark:  Recognize characteristics of art works

                        a.  TLW create a life plastering project

Standard Five:  Reflect upon and assess the characteristics and merits of their work and works of others

Benchmark:  Recognize through inquiry reasons for creating art works from different eras and cultures

Middle School Chorus

Standard 1:  Sing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music

            Benchmark:  Sing music written in three parts

a.       TLW sing independently his/her part in written music

Benchmark:  Demonstrate ensemble skills

a.       TLW sing using ensemble skills, i.e.: balance, blend, intonation, dynamics, phrasing, diction

b.      TLW demonstrate appropriate character in a performance setting

Standard 3:  Read and notate music

            Benchmark:  Demonstrate the ability to read rhythm and pitch

a.       TLW count specified rhythms

b.      TLW identify pitches on a staff

c.       TLW interpret musical signs, i.e.: time signatures, staccato, legato, ties

Standard 4:  Listen to, analyze, and interpret music

            Benchmark:  Demonstrate the ability to analyze and interpret music

Middle School Band
