Ceramics II

Standard One:  Understand and apply different media, techniques, and processes to communicate in the visual arts

Benchmark:  Students understand the methods and techniques involved with hand built and wheel thrown pottery construction.

a.       TLW do wedging and preparing clay for use, pinch/molding, coil, slab, wheel throwing, pulling handles, glazing, kiln firing

Standard Two:  Apply knowledge of the organizational components of visual art and the elements and principles of design to artwork

Benchmark: Students will create functional or decorative pottery that is aesthetically pleasing incorporating the elements and principles of design.

a.       TLW combine and demonstrate a superior degree of technical skills, the artistic elements and principles of design using an original design/pattern to create artistic work.

Standard Three:  Choose and evaluate a range of subject matter, symbols, and ideas

Benchmark:  Students select, use, and combine artistic elements and principles of design, technical skills and materials to create an original work of art

a.       TLW make functional and nonfunctional ceramic pieces

Standard Four:  Understand the visual arts in relation to history and cultures and the roles of art for self and society

Benchmark:  Students create pottery that exhibits influences from various historical periods and various cultures through group projects and individual projects.

a.       TLW plan out pieces to follow research studied and complete pottery according to plan/research.

Standard Five:  Reflect upon and assess the characteristics and merits of their work and works of others

Benchmark:  Students analyze and communicate how technical and organizational ideas, along with the elements and principles, contribute to the overall impact of artistic work.

a.       TLW orally critique each other’s ceramic pieces based on the assignment rubrics. Students will show work in a public place.

Standard Six:  Make connections between visual arts and other disciplines

Benchmark:  Students demonstrate a good attitude and work ethic, and demonstrate respect for individual differences.

a.       TLW be able to effectively communicate using the correct vocabulary, and terminology to explain their technical skills.
