Reading:

Standard 1:  Reading Process

Benchmark:  Demonstrate phonics

a.  TLW apply decoding skills to words, i.e.: prefixes, suffixes, plurals  . . .

Benchmark:  Demonstrate vocabulary skills

a.       TLW recognize and define grade appropriate or content appropriate vocabulary

Standard 2:  Reading a Variety of Texts

Benchmark:  Demonstrate comprehension

a.       TLW examine the author’s view or purpose

b.      TLW recognize clue words as a means of sequencing

c.       TLW use prior knowledge and experience to respond to new information, i.e.: predicting, inferring, drawing conclusions, deducing meaning . . .

d.      TLW identify basic information from texts

e.       TLW, after reading a selection, summarize their reading with a response

f.        TLW explain the use of cause and effect in passages

g.       TLW deduce the main idea in paragraphs

Standard 1:  Writing Process

            Benchmark:  Produce well developed and audience appropriate ideas

a.       TLW generate writing ideas through discussions with others, group brainstorming, printed materials, and self-reflection

b.      TLW establish and develop a clear thesis statement for narrative, informative, and persuasive writing

c.       TLW determine a purpose that is audience appropriate and plan strategies (i.e. adapting focus, content structure, point of view) to address purpose and audience

Benchmark:  Write with coherence and organization

a.       TLW establish/create an outline which includes an introduction, body, and conclusion and reflects the proper components

b.      TLW use transition words to link paragraphs and show inter-relationships of paragraphs

c.       TLW organize writing to create a coherent whole with an effective and engaging introduction, body and conclusions, and a closing sentence that summarizes, extends, or elaborates on points or ideas in the writing

Benchmark:  Select words that are appropriate to audience and purpose

a.       TLW use language (including precise language, actions verbs, sensory details and colorful modifiers) and style as appropriate to audience and purpose, and use techniques to convey a personal style and voice

Benchmark:  Construct a variety of sentence patterns

a.       TLW use a variety of sentence structures and lengths (i.e.: simple, compound, and complex sentences; parallel or repetitive sentence structure)

Benchmark:  Correctly apply the rules of mechanics and grammar

a.        TLW proofread writing, edit to improve conventions (i.e.: grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization), identify and correct fragments and run-on sentences and eliminate inappropriate slang or informal language

Standard 2:  Research

            Benchmark:  Use technology and reference materials to locate information

a.       TLW identify appropriate sources and gather relevant information from multiple sources (i.e.: school library catalogs, online databases, electronic resources, internet-based resources)

Benchmark:  Prepare a presentation using primary/secondary sources

a.       TLW use a variety of communication techniques, including oral, visual, written, or multimedia reports, to present information that supports a clear position about the topic or research question

b.      TLW use style guides to produce oral and written reports that give proper credit for sources and include appropriate in-text documentation, notes and an acceptable format for source acknowledgement

Standard 3:  Speaking, Listening, Viewing

            Benchmark:  Demonstrate speaking skills for learning

a.       TLW demonstrate an understanding of the rules of the English language and select language appropriate to purpose and audience

Benchmark:  Demonstrate listening skills for learning

a.       TLW apply active listening strategies (i.e.: monitoring, checking for clarity, selecting and organizing essential information, noting cues, such as changes in pace) in a variety of settings

Benchmark:  Demonstrate viewing skills for learning

a.       TLW view videos for information and visualization of concepts

b.      TLW gain information from a variety of visuals including charts, maps, graphs, and graphic organizers
