Reading:

Standard 1:  Reading Process

Benchmark:  Demonstrate phonics.

a.       TLW apply decoding skills to words, i.e.: prefixes, suffixes, plurals  . . .

Benchmark:  Demonstrate vocabulary skills.

a.       TLW recognize and define grade appropriate or content appropriate vocabulary

Standard 2:  Reading a Variety of Texts

Benchmark:  Demonstrate comprehension

a.       TLW interpret the author’s view or purpose

b.      TLW recognize clue words as a means of sequencing

c.       TLW use prior knowledge and experience to respond to new information, i.e.: predicting, inferring, drawing conclusions, deducing meaning . . .

Standard 3:  Measurement

Science/Health:

Standard 1:  Science as Inquiry

            Benchmark:    Demonstrate the abilities necessary for scientific inquiry.

  • Identify and generate questions that can be answered through scientific investigations.

  • Recognize that scientists perform different types of investigations.

  • Plan and conduct scientific investigations.

  • Use appropriate tools and techniques to gather, process, and analyze data.

  • Incorporate mathematics in science inquiries.

  • Use evidence to develop reasonable explanations.

  • Communicate scientific procedures and explanations.

  • Follow appropriate safety procedures when conducting investigations.

Standard 2:  Physical Science

Benchmark:  Understand and apply knowledge of sound, light, electricity, magnetism and heat.

·         Sound is produced when vibrations from objects travel through a medium and are received.  Sound can vary in volume.  The pitch of a sound can be varied by changing the rate of vibration.

·         Light travels in a straight line until it strikes an object.  Light can be reflected by a mirror, refracted by a lens, or absorbed by an object.

·         Electricity in circuits can produce light, heat, sound, and magnetic effects.  Electricity can only flow through a closed circuit.

·         Magnets attract and repel each other and certain kinds of other materials.

·         Heat can be produced in many ways, such as burning, rubbing, or mixing one substance with another.  Hear can move from one object to another by conduction.

Standard 3:  Life Science

Benchmark:  Understand and apply knowledge of basic human body systems and how they work together.

·         The human organism has systems which interact with one another.  These systems include circulatory, respiratory, digestive, musculoskeletal, etc.

Benchmark:  Understand and apply knowledge of personal health and wellness issues.

Standard 4:  Earth /Space Science

Benchmark:  Understand and apply knowledge of properties and uses of earth materials.

·         The different physical and chemical properties of earth materials make them useful in different ways, for example, as building materials, as sources of fuel, or for growing the plants we use as foods.

Benchmark:  Understand and apply knowledge of processes and changes on or in the earth’s land, oceans and atmosphere.

·         The surface of the earth changes.  Some changes are due to slow process, such as erosion and weathering, and some changes are due to rapid processes such as landslides, volcanic eruption, floods and earthquakes.

Standard 6:  Social and Personal Perspective

Benchmark:  Understand and demonstrate knowledge of personal health and wellness issues

Benchmark:  Understand and demonstrate knowledge of the effects of drugs on the body

 

Social Studies

Standard 1:  Geography

            Benchmark:  Compare types of land forms

a.       TLW identify major land and water forms, i.e.:  tributary, plateau, wetland, island

Benchmark:  Show ability to use maps

a.       TLW use parts of a map, i.e.:  scale, compass rose, key

Standard 2:  History

Benchmark:  Explain the cause and effect of war on the U.S. in the 20th century

a.       TLW describe changes in society, i.e.:  women’s right, civil rights, affirmative action

b.      TLW illustrate cultural differences in the U.S., i.e.:  immigration, emigration, breadbasket

c.       TLW compare and contrast the economic times of the 20th century in the U.S., i.e.:  depression, inflation, national deficit

Benchmark:  Identify technology’s role in the growth of the U.S. in the 20th century

a.       TLW describe the change the Industrial Revolution made on the development of the U.S., i.e.:  factories, supply/demand, assembly lines, computers

b.      TLW explain the importance of the U.S. space program and its changes, i.e.:  man on the moon, shuttles, failures  

Standard 3:  Political Science and Citizenship

Benchmark:  Identify the makeup of the U.S. government and the Constitution

a.       TLW distinguish the branches of government and their roles and responsibilities

b.      TLW recognize the importance of the Bill of Rights and Amendments to the Constitution, i.e.:  women’s right, impeachment

 

Art

Standard Three:  Choose and evaluate a range of subject matter, symbols, and ideas

Benchmark:  Examine, select, and use subject matter, content symbols and ideas to communicate meaning

a.       TLW draw a picture using specific subject matter

b.      TLW produce a picture depicting a certain mood or feeling

Standard Four:  Understand the visual arts in relation to history and cultures and the roles of art for self and society

Benchmark:  Know, identify and demonstrate how the visual arts made historical significance to self and society

a.       TLW identify, describe and interpret art styles of various cultures

b.      TLW recognize that each culture has its own aesthetic values, such as abstract art (Picasso) and realism (Michelangelo)

Standard Five:  Reflect upon and assess the characteristics and merits of their work and works of others

Benchmark:  Understand and describe various purposes, experiments and responses to specific artwork

a.       TLW describe how experiences influence the development of artwork

b.      TLW explain there are various interpretations of their own and others visual art

Standard Six:  Make connections between visual arts and other disciplines

Benchmark:  Identify, recognize and use comparisons between visual arts and other disciplines

Music

            Benchmark:  Demonstrate an understanding of singing on pitch

            Benchmark:  Demonstrate the ability to read and notate rhythm and pitch

            Benchmark:  Demonstrate the ability to analyze and interpret music

Band

c.       TLW demonstrate fast walking/jogging/running during their 5 minute warm-up

Benchmark:  Understand the components of wellness
