Health Standards and Benchmarks

 

Standard One – Health promotion and disease prevention

            Benchmark:  Understand what good health is

a.       TLW explain the impact of personal health behaviors on the functioning of body systems

Benchmark:  Recognizing health problems

a.       TLW analyze how behavior can impact health maintenance and disease prevention

Benchmark:  Understand ways in which lifestyle, the environment, and public policies can promote health

a.       TLW describe how to delay onset and reduce risks of potential health problems during adulthood

Standard Two – Practice health-enhancing behaviors and reduce health risks

            Benchmark:  Recognize responsible and harmful behaviors

a.       TLW analyze the short-term and long-term consequences of safe and risky or harmful behaviors

Benchmark:  Develop health-enhancing strategies

a.       TLW analyze the role of individual responsibility for enhancing health

b.      TLW develop strategies to improve or maintain personal, family, and community health

Standard Three – Culture, media, technology, and other factors on health

            Benchmark:  Understand how one’s cultural background, messages from the media, technology, and one’s friends influence health.

a.       TLW evaluate how cultural diversity enriches and challenges health behaviors

b.      TLW analyze how information from the community influences health

Standard Four - Interpersonal communication skill to enhance health

            Benchmark:  Understand how interpersonal communication, refusal and negotiation skills, and conflict resolution can affect health

a.       TLW demonstrate skills for communicating effectively with family, peers, and others

b.      TLW demonstrate strategies for solving interpersonal conflicts without harming self or others

c.       TLW demonstrate refusal, negotiation, and collaboration skills to avoid potentially harmful situations

Standard Five – Goal-setting and decision-making skills to enhance health

            Benchmark:  Understand the importance of positive decision-making skills

a.       TLW predict immediate and long-term impact of health decisions on the individual, family, and community

b.      TLW demonstrate the ability to utilize various strategies when making decisions related to health needs and risks of young adults

Standard Six – Advocate for personal, family, and community health

Benchmark:  Understand how to accurately communicate health information and ideas

a.       TLW express information and opinions about health issues
