Standard 1: Reading Process

Science/Health:

Standard 1:  Science as Inquiry

Benchmark: Demonstrate the abilities necessary for scientific inquiry

  • Ask questions about objects, organisms, and events in the environment.

  • Plan and conduct simple investigations.

  • Use tools to gather data and extend the senses.

  • Use mathematics in scientific inquiry.

  • Use data to construct reasonable explanations.

  • Communicate investigations and explanations.

  • Follow appropriate safety procedures when conducting investigations.

            Standard 2:  Physical Science

                        Benchmark:  Understand and apply knowledge of characteristics of liquids and solids.

·         Materials can exist in different states – solid, liquid, and gas.

·         Some common materials, such as water, can be changed from one state to another by heating or cooling.

Standard 3:  Life Science

                        Benchmark:  Understand and apply knowledge of life cycles of plants and animals.

·         Plants and animals have life cycles that include being born, developing into adults, reproducing, and eventually dying.

·         Plants and animals closely resemble their parents.

Benchmark:  Understand and apply knowledge of the basic needs of plants and animals and how they interact with each other and their physical environment.

·         Organisms have basic needs.  For example, animals need air, water, and food; plants require air, water, nutrients, and light.

·         Organisms interact with each other and their physical environment.

·         Organisms can survive only in environments in which their needs can be met.

·         The world has many different environments, and distinct environments support the life of different types of organisms.

Standard 4:  Earth Science

            Benchmark:  Understand and apply knowledge of properties of earth materials.

·         Earth materials are solid rocks and soils, water and the gases of the atmosphere.  The varied materials have different physical and chemical properties.

·         Soils have properties of color and texture, capacity to retain water, and ability to support the growth of many kinds of plants, including those in our food supply.

Standard 6:  Social and Personal Perspective

Benchmark:  Apply and understand the importance of a healthy diet by identifying healthy foods and categorizing them in the basic food groups.

 

Social Studies

Standard 1:  Geography

            Benchmark: Show ability to use map skills

Standard 2:  History

Benchmark: Understand how communities have developed

Art

Standard One:  Understand and apply different media, techniques, and processes to communicate in the visual arts

Benchmark:  Describe and use different fine arts media, techniques and processes to communicate in a safe and responsible manner

a.       TLW use techniques to depict ideas, feelings, and moods in their art projects

Standard Two:  Apply knowledge of the organizational components of visual art and the elements and principles of design to artwork

Benchmark:  Understand, describe and begin to use the visual and expressive characteristics of the organizational components of visual arts to communicate ideas: i.e. line, shape, color, texture, patterns, repetitions, balance, emphasis, contrast, unity

Music

Standard 1:  Sing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music

Benchmark:  Discriminate between pitch and volume

a.       TLW move his/her voice to show high and low

b.      TLW move to show recognition of loud and soft

c.       TLW move his/her body to show recognition of high and low

Benchmark:  Demonstrate an understanding of singing on pitch

a.       TLW sing a variety of songs on pitch          

Benchmark:  Demonstrate ensemble skills

a.       TLW sing using ensemble skills, i.e.: dynamics, blend

b.      TLW demonstrate appropriate character in a performance setting

c.       TLW demonstrate fast walking/jogging/running during their 5 minute warm-up

Benchmark:  Understand the components of wellness

a.    TLW identify many sports as lifetime activities

b.   TLW identify the correct techniques in the proper care of their bodies

c.    TLW exercise moderately and strenuously while socializing with classmates

            Benchmark:  Understand the components of individual and team concepts

a.    TLW identify the basic rules and terminology of each unit

b.   TLW demonstrate the skills learned for each particular unit

c.    TLW demonstrate sportsmanlike behavior and attitude
