Standard 1 – Communicate in Languages Other than English

Benchmark:  Engage in conversations and show an understanding of written and spoken language using the present tense

a.       TLW carry on short conversations about personal interests including what they are doing and what they are going to do

b.      TLW ask and answer simple questions using practiced patterns

c.       TLW state personal preferences and feelings 

d.      TLW express agreement and disagreement using memorized expressions

e.       TLW write and present short narratives on familiar topics

f.        TLW write short, guided compositions on course appropriate topics  

Benchmark:  Show an understanding of a variety of topics using course appropriate vocabulary

a.       TLW read and respond to level appropriate written materials on familiar topics

b.      TLW understand written and spoken language that has strong visual support

c.       TLW identify oral and visual clues within a limited context

d.      TLW begin to derive meaning using cognates, contextual clues, and classroom experiences 

Standard 2 – Gain Knowledge and Understanding of Other Cultures

Benchmark:  Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices, products and perspectives of the cultures studied

a.       TLW observe and imitate patterns of behavior (greetings, gestures, and common interactions)

b.      TLW identify some common beliefs and attitudes within the cultures studied

c.       TLW participate in age-appropriate cultural practices such as songs, games and holidays

d.      TLW identify objects and symbols such as flags, foods, currency, etc. that represent the cultures being studied

e.       TLW identify contributions from the target cultures such as artwork, architecture, music, dance, literature, etc.

f.        TLW locate, organize and share cultural information from various sources

Standard 3 – Make Connections With Other Disciplines

Benchmark:  Reinforce and further knowledge of other disciplines through the study of Spanish

a.       TLW identify and apply content skills from other subjects such as math, weather, geography, phonics, grammar and reading

b.      TLW use authentic sources and research skills to identify perspectives of the target language

Standard 4 – Develop Insight into the Nature of Language and Culture

            Benchmark:  Demonstrate an understanding of the nature of language and cultural concepts through comparisons to their own language and culture

a.       TLW identify and apply sound patterns of the target language and compare these patterns to that of their own language

b.      TLW identify and apply structural patterns of the target language and compare these patterns to their own language

c.       TLW identify cognates and idiomatic expressions of the target language

d.      TLW identify the similarities and differences between the target cultures and the student’s own culture

e.       TLW identify similar and different behavioral patterns between the target culture and the student’s own culture

Standard 5 – Participate in Multilingual Communities at Home and Around the World

            Benchmark:  Use the language both within and beyond the school setting

a.       TLW practice key phrases in the target language with family and peers

b.      TLW become aware of or participate in outside language opportunities such as trips and community cultural events

c.       TLW expand cultural horizons through the enjoyment of literature, music, art, theatre, cuisine and travel

d.      TLW use media and technology to remain aware of past and current world events

e.       TLW establish and/or maintain interpersonal relations with speakers of the language
