Standard 1 – Communicate in Languages Other Than English

Benchmark:  Engage in conversations and show an understanding of written and spoken language using past and present tenses

a.       TLW carry on a short conversation about personal interests including what they have done, are doing and are planning to do

b.      TLW ask and answer a variety of questions giving reasons for answers

c.       TLW exchange personal preferences and feelings

d.      TLW express agreement and disagreement

e.       TLW write and deliver short presentations on familiar topics

f.        TLW write guided compositions on familiar topics 

Benchmark:  Show an understanding of a variety of topics using course appropriate vocabulary

a.       TLW read and respond to level-appropriate written materials on a broader range of familiar topics

b.      TLW comprehend the main idea and key words and phrases of selected authentic material

c.       TLW understand spoken and written language that incorporates familiar vocabulary and structures

d.      TLW identify oral, visual and contextual clues and derive meaning from those clues using word forms, word order and cognates as guides

Standard 2 – Gain Knowledge and Understanding of Other Cultures

Benchmark:  Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices, products and perspectives of the cultures studied

a.       TLW identify some common beliefs and attitudes within the cultures studied and compare them to their own beliefs and attitudes

b.      TLW learn about and participate in age-appropriate cultural practices such as songs, games, holidays and school

c.       TLW identify and compare objects and symbols from other cultures to those of their own culture

d.      TLW identify and experience contributions from the target cultures such as artwork, architecture, music, dance and literature

e.       TLW locate, organize and present cultural information from a variety of sources 

Standard 3 – Make Connections with Other Disciplines

Benchmark:  Reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through the study of Spanish

a.       TLW identify and apply topics and skills from other school subjects

b.      TLW identify and examine information usable for other disciplines, gathered from authentic language resources

c.       TLW use authentic sources to identify and examine perspectives of the target language 

Standard 4 – Develop Insight into the Nature of Language and Culture

Benchmark:  Demonstrate an understanding of the nature of language and cultural concepts through comparisons to their own language 

a.       TLW identify and apply the sound patterns of the Spanish language

b.      TLW identify and apply structural patterns of the Spanish language and compare them to the student’s own language

c.       TLW identify and compare cognates and idiomatic expressions of the Spanish language and the student’s own language

d.      TLW examine the similarities and differences between the target cultures and the student’s own culture

e.       TLW identify connections between the English and Spanish language

f.        TLW compare and contrast similarities and differences between the target cultures and the student’s own culture

Standard 5 – Participate in Multilingual Communities at Home and Around the World

            Benchmark:  Students use the language both within and beyond the school setting

a.       TLW use the Spanish language to communicate through interaction with family members, peers, pen pals, community members and outside guests

b.      TLW become aware of and/ or participate in outside language opportunities such as camps, trips and community cultural events

c.       TLW expand cultural horizons through the enjoyment of literature, music, art, theater, cuisine and travel

d.      TLW use media and technology to become and remain aware of world events

e.       TLW establish and/or maintain interpersonal relations with speakers of the language
