Standard 1 – Communicate in Languages Other Than English

Benchmark:  Engage in conversations and show an understanding of written and spoken language using past, present and future tenses

a.       TLW sustain a conversation about themselves on selected topics of interest using a variety of grammar concepts

b.      TLW ask and respond to open-ended questions

c.       TLW exchange feelings and ideas of self and others with some explanation

d.      TLW express agreement and disagreement as well as give an explanation to reasoning

e.       TLW present self-created skits and dialogs on various topics

f.        TLW write compositions with a little guidance on a wider range of topics

Benchmark:  Show an understanding of a variety of topics using course appropriate vocabulary

a.       TLW read and respond to selected materials on a variety of topics

b.      TLW demonstrate comprehension of the main idea and some important details in authentic materials

c.       TLW use listening and reading strategies to understand a variety of topics

d.      TLW identify and gain meaning from a wider variety of audio, visual and context clues 

Standard 2 – Gain Knowledge and Understanding of Other Cultures

Benchmark:  Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices, products and perspectives of the cultures studied

a.       TLW begin to interact with sensitivity, respect and an open mind to activities studied within the cultures

b.      TLW study common beliefs and mannerisms and compare them to their own

c.       TLW examine and compare objects and symbols from other culture to those of their own culture

d.      TLW experience and discuss contributions from the target cultures such as artwork, architecture, music, dance and literature

e.       TLW locate, organize and present cultural information from a variety of sources

Standard 3 – Make Connections with Other Disciplines

Benchmark:  Reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through the study of Spanish

a.       TLW identify and apply topics and skills from other school subjects

b.      TLW identify and analyze information usable for other disciplines, gathered from authentic Spanish language resources

c.       TLW use authentic sources to identify and analyze perspectives of the target language

Standard 4 – Develop Insight into the Nature of Language and Culture

Benchmark:  Demonstrate an understanding of the nature of language and cultural concepts through comparisons to their own language

a.       TLW apply the sound patterns of the Spanish language

b.      TLW use prior knowledge of structural patterns of the Spanish and English language and use that knowledge to effectively communicate

c.       TLW compare and contrast cognates and idiomatic expressions of the Spanish language and the student’s own language

d.      TLW analyze the similarities and differences between the target cultures and the student’s own culture

e.       TLW identify and apply connections between the English and Spanish language

f.        TLW compare and contrast similarities and differences between the target cultures and the student’s own culture

g.       TLW explain the changing nature of languages (technological advances, slang, regional differences, etc.)  

Standard 5 – Participate in Multilingual Communities at Home and Around the World

Benchmark:  Use the language both within and beyond the school setting

a.       TLW carry on conversations with peers and others in the Spanish language

b.      TLW seek out opportunities to participate in language opportunities such as clubs, trips, and community cultural events

c.       TLW expand cultural horizons through the enjoyment of literature, music, art, theater, cuisine and travel

d.      TLW use media and technology to remain aware of world events

e.       TLW establish and/or maintain interpersonal relations with speakers of the language
