Standard 1 – Communicate in Languages Other Than English

Benchmark: Engage in conversations and show an understanding of written and spoken language using past, present, future, subjunctive moods and other complex tenses

a. TLW ask and answer a variety of questions that require elaborate and sustained opinions

b. TLW discuss feelings and ideas about self and others

c. TLW compare, contrast, express and support opinions and make suggestions and recommendations using the subjunctive mood

d. TLW present student-created works on a wide variety of topics

e. TLW write formal compositions with very little guidance for a variety of purposes

f. TLW write and deliver presentations on substantial topics

Benchmark: Show an understanding of a variety of topics using course appropriate vocabulary

a. TLW use broadened listening and reading skills to understand a wide range of topics

b. TLW comprehend the main idea and important details of Spanish language materials

c. TLW use listening and reading strategies to understand a variety of topics

Standard 2 – Gain Knowledge and Understanding of Other Cultures

Benchmark: Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices, products and perspectives of the cultures studied

a. TLW begin to interact with sensitivity, respect and an open mind to activities studied within the cultures

b. TLW study and explain common beliefs, perspectives and attitudes and how they affect behaviors of the cultures studied

c. TLW examine the role and importance of various cultural practices

d. TLW experience, discuss, and analyze contributions from the target cultures such as literary works and fine arts

e. TLW explore and present cultural information using various media resources

Standard 3 – Make Connections with Other Disciplines

Benchmark: Reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through the study of Spanish

a. TLW apply information and skills from other school subjects such as politics, history, and advanced reading strategies

b. TLW locate and apply authentic Spanish language materials to other areas of discipline

c. TLW use authentic sources to produce perspectives of the Spanish speaking cultures

Standard 4 – Develop Insight into the Nature of Language and Culture

Benchmark: Demonstrate an understanding of the nature of language and cultural concepts through comparisons to their own language

a. TLW apply the sound patterns of the Spanish language

b. TLW use prior knowledge of structural patterns of the Spanish and English language and use that knowledge to effectively communicate

c. TLW use cognates and idiomatic expressions of the Spanish language in correct context to convey meaning

d. TLW identify and describe how the English and Spanish languages influence each other

e. TLW explain the similarities and differences between the target cultures and the student’s own culture and how they are significant

f. TLW use the knowledge of behavioral patterns of the target culture and student’s own culture to interact effectively in a variety of social settings

Standard 5 – Participate in Multilingual Communities at Home and Around the World

Benchmark: Use the language both within and beyond the school setting

a. TLW carry on expanded conversations with peers and others in the Spanish language

b. TLW seek out opportunities to participate in language activities such as clubs, trips, community cultural events

c. TLW expand cultural horizons through the enjoyment of literature, music, art, theater, cuisine and travel

d. TLW use media and technology to remain aware of world events

e. TLW establish and/or maintain interpersonal relations with speakers of the language
