Apple Sales Go Down

Bruce and Nancy Potter own the Glen Robin Apple Orchard located outside of Griswold, Iowa. The Nishnabotna River flows between the apple orchard and Griswold. The water from the Nishnabotna River went only half way up the hill that the apple orchard is located on. Although the apples were not hurt the strawberry patch was destroyed. It is located at the bottom of the hill.

The Potters were at church when the river overflowed. Mr. Potter helped three elderly women to safe ground. He also helped moved vehicles to higher ground. It was hard because Griswold is flat.

The  fast moving water caused  the sand under the bridge and each time a car went over it sloped down. The Department of Transportation closed down the bridge for the safety of travelers. This made it possible to go directly from the orchard to Griswold. Instead of going one mile to Griswold people had to go eleven miles around. Bruce Potter wheeled carts with apples in them across the closed bridge for two weeks.   Then the crew com  Bruce set up an apple stand in Griswold so that he could still sell them to get some of his sales.  Even though he sold apples in town, he only sold half of his crops.
