Parks Impacted By FloodMr. Kay Hill works as a Department of Natural Resources (DNR) officer at Cold Springs Park. Cold Springs Park is located outside of Lewis, Iowa, which is between Griswold and Atlantic, Iowa. Kay Hill noticed that it was raining hard on June 14th so he went to check on Cold Springs Park. The campground had to be closed because you couldn't drive into the park due to the high flood water. Even though the campground had to be closed it really wasn't impacted by the flood of 1998 because it is located on a hill. However, the office at Cold Springs had gotten water in it and they had to move the furniture so it didn't get wet. They had to repair the walls, doors, and toilets in their main office. Work had to be done to repair damage to the boats. Plants benefited because the algae helped the plants grow, but the fish suffered because of the algae. Chemicals from the nearby fields helped the algae grow stronger because more chemicals were coming towards the water. Under water, algae died and fish got trapped, so most of them suffocated. The fish were the only animals that were heavily impacted. Cold Springs Park had to restock the fish because the mud was mixed up in the water. The fish could not breathe under the water, because their gills were full of mud. The Fish Farm, which is located north of Griswold, was completely flooded. Campers were evacuated and tents were seen floating in the water. This campground is very flat so the water got very high. Fish here also died due to the same causes as the fish at Cold Springs Park.
