You had to see it to believe it!

On Saturday, June 13th, 1998, it started raining heavily in Griswold and throughout Cass County, Iowa. The rain continued falling through the night and on June 14th 13.18 inches of rain were recorded in Atlantic. Griswold reported 6.54 inches of rain. This caused the East Nishnabotna River and the Baughman Branch to overflow rapidly and water rushed through the streets of Griswold. People with airboats and the fire and rescue departments road through the streets getting people out of their houses and helping them to safe ground. The Griswold Community Center served as an emergency shelter for Griswold residents. June 15th and the following days were spent cleaning up from the flood. The water rushed so fast that it made the bridge over the Nishnabotna River on HWY 92 unsafe. The bridge was closed from June 1998 until April 1999 which caused people to detour 11 miles just to go 1 mile into town.
