Griswold CSD Invests in Future Teachers
When Griswold Community School District began its recent strategic planning process, one priority quickly rose to the top: recruiting and retaining high-quality staff who are deeply connected to the community.

One strategy stood out — continuing the Para-to-Teacher Pathway.

Designed to help current paraeducators transition into licensed teaching roles, the program invests in individuals who are already making a difference in Griswold classrooms. This year, that investment continues.

Griswold CSD proudly congratulates Shelby Steffen, one of two recipients of the 2026 Para-to-Teacher Pathway Grant. The award helps offset the cost of her education degrees as she works toward becoming a licensed teacher. By supporting staff members who are already committed to Griswold students, the district is strengthening its future from within.

Quick Chat with Grant Recipient, Shelby Steffen:
For Shelby Steffen, being a paraeducator is all about connection. “I love being able to connect with all the kids and help them in any way I can. It’s incredibly rewarding to watch them grow and gain confidence throughout the year.” Now, with support from the Para-to-Teacher Pathway Grant, she’s taking the next step toward leading a classroom of her own. “This grant means I can continue my education with the support of the same community I grew up in. Knowing the community believes in me makes this opportunity even more meaningful.” Shelby is currently studying Elementary Education at Buena Vista University and hopes to teach younger students — first grade would be her dream — though she’s happy to serve wherever she’s needed most. As a Griswold graduate, her journey feels especially full circle. “It feels special to give back to the district that gave so much to me.” Walking the same halls that once shaped her, Shelby is inspired daily to become the kind of educator who makes that same lasting impact on the next generation.

About the Grant
The Para-to-Teacher Pathway was previously funded through a state grant and has already yielded meaningful results. To date, three former paraeducators have transitioned into teaching roles in the district’s elementary school, with another currently completing the process. Three of the four are longtime Griswold residents.

For many participants, the scholarship has been life-changing. “The Para-to-Teacher Pathway Grant was the difference-maker in me deciding that I would go back to school to be a teacher,” said a past recipient and current Griswold CSD teacher.

The program creates a win-win scenario: participants receive financial assistance and career advancement, while the district fills teaching positions with familiar faces who understand the culture, care deeply about students, and are invested in the community long term.

Griswold CSD hopes to offer three $4,000 grants annually — totaling $12,000 per year — to support paraeducators transitioning into teaching roles. Recipients must have worked in the district for at least two years and complete their education program within three years. Both the district and recipients agree to make a good-faith effort to continue employment locally when opportunities exist.

From an administrative perspective, the program helps stabilize the district by developing educators who are committed to the community for the long term.
